Port Stephens Hapkido
Hapkido is a highly effective and complete martial art focused on self-defence, blending strikes, throws, grappling and joint manipulation into a single dynamic system. At Him-Do Tae Kwon Do Academy in Port Stephens, our Hapkido classes are open to students aged 12 and above and suitable for all experience levels.
This style is known for its circular movements and redirection of force, making it practical and efficient for real-world defence. Students learn to neutralise opponents through technique rather than strength, building both confidence and capability.
Whether you’re training for self-protection, improved fitness or personal growth, Hapkido offers a rewarding path that sharpens the mind and strengthens the body—guided by experienced instructors in a structured and welcoming environment.
About Hapkido
Why Take Hapkido Classes?
More than just a striking art, Hapkido includes instruction in the use of traditional weapons such as the knife, sword, cane, short stick (dan bong) and middle-length staff (joong bong). Weapon training develops coordination, focus and control while deepening your understanding of self-defence principles. Some classes may also include gun defence techniques, depending on age group and progression level.
Hapkido encourages mental resilience as much as physical skill, with an emphasis on discipline, situational awareness and de-escalation strategies. At Him-Do Tae Kwon Do Academy, students gain:
- Well-rounded self-defence skills using hands, feet and body leverage
- Confidence and composure under pressure
- Weapon training adapted to age and ability
- Improved strength and flexibility through full-body movement
- Mind-body discipline rooted in martial arts tradition
What makes Hapkido different from other martial arts?
Hapkido combines a wide range of techniques—joint locks, throws, strikes and weapon training—into a unified system. It’s focused on redirecting force, making it suitable for students of all sizes and strengths.
Do I need experience to start Hapkido?
No prior martial arts experience is needed. Hapkido is taught in a structured, progressive way, so beginners can build confidence step by step while developing solid self-defence foundations.
Is Hapkido suitable for self-defence in real-life situations?
Yes. Hapkido was designed as a practical self-defence system. It teaches techniques that work in close-range situations and emphasises awareness, control and response under real-world conditions.
