Port Stephens Taekwondo
Taekwondo is one of the oldest and most respected martial arts in the world, with roots tracing back more than 2,000 years. At Him-Do Tae Kwon Do Academy in Port Stephens, we proudly teach both World Taekwondo (WT) and International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) styles.
WT is best known for its Olympic-style sparring, explosive kicks and competitive scoring system. In contrast, ITF focuses on traditional martial arts, with an emphasis on patterns, discipline, self-defence and full-contact sparring. Our classes are open to all skill levels and ages 4+, with Junior sessions for children aged 4–8 and Senior classes for those 8 and above.
Whether your goal is fitness, competition or confidence, our supportive environment helps students unlock their potential while learning practical skills that last a lifetime.
About Taekwondo
Why Take Taekwondo Classes?
Taekwondo offers much more than physical fitness—it’s a pathway to personal growth, discipline and resilience. Students at Him-Do Tae Kwon Do Academy benefit from a well-rounded curriculum designed to support both physical and mental development. Each class combines structured instruction with personal progression, allowing students to advance at their own pace while working towards clearly defined goals. Our dual-style teaching approach means students experience the energy of Olympic sparring and the depth of traditional martial arts. Along the way, they gain:
- Strength, endurance and flexibility through engaging physical routines
- Discipline and focus by mastering complex techniques and gradings
- Effective self-defence skills grounded in practical application
- A sense of achievement as they grow in confidence and ability
- Respect and courtesy as core values reinforced in every class
What is the difference between WT and ITF Taekwondo?
WT (World Taekwondo) is a modern, sport-oriented style that emphasises speed, agility and point-based sparring. ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) follows a traditional martial arts path, incorporating formal patterns, full-contact sparring and strong self-defence foundations.
Is Taekwondo a good form of self-defence?
Yes, Taekwondo equips students with real-world skills such as blocking, striking and evading threats. It builds confidence, awareness and quick decision-making, which are essential for personal safety in everyday situations.
Can Taekwondo improve behaviour and focus in kids?
Absolutely. The discipline of Taekwondo helps children learn respect, patience and how to follow structured routines. As they progress, they also develop better concentration, listening skills and self-esteem—qualities that extend beyond the dojo.
